In the 1990s, president Colin Banks had the foresight to suggest including the word ‘international’ in the Society’s name. As a great ‘networker’, he enjoyed working with and for design related umbrella organisations such as ICOGRADA, and ATypI. Since then ISTD has more than fulfilled his vision of a truly international professional body and continues to develop relationships with individuals and organisations around the world.
The Society has a network of like-minded individuals in over twenty countries. Included amongst our members, fellows and honorary fellows are: Derek Birdsall, Hans Bockting, Margaret Calvert, Baer Cornet, Wim Crouwel, Vince Frost, Allan Haley, Angus Hyland, Alan Kitching, Prof. John McMillan, Lucienne Roberts, Sir John Sorrell, Erik Spiekermann, Astrid Stavro, and Prof. Teal Triggs.
With a heritage that has been promoting excellence in typographic design since 1928, ISTD's past members have included Edward Burrett, Tom Eckersley OBE, Anthony Froshaug, Josef Müller-Brockmann, Alan Fletcher, Milner Gray, Austin Granjean, Michael Harvey MBE, FHK Henrion OBE, and Sir Francis Meynell.
An important section of ISTD’s membership is made up by those who, as students, successfully completed the assessment scheme and have continued during their career with the Society. Through the scheme’s international outreach, ISTD’s network includes members worldwide, including professionals from education and industry in the related geographic areas. Professional members have also been introduced to ISTD through the prestigious International Typographic Awards.
