Erik Spiekermann, FISTD PPISTD
Erik Spiekermann was ISTD President 2002-05, succeeding the late Colin Banks. He is one of the best-known figures on the international typographic scene. A type designer, and typographic designer, he has built a solid reputation for high quality typography and original, sometimes acerbic, always entertaining, commentary on typographic life.
Now working as an independent design consultant, Spiekermann previously founded both the leading font marketing company FontShop and MetaDesign, a design group specialising in complex, often large, corporate design programmes and information systems. He is a member of the board of directors of the ATypI (Association Typographique Internationale), a member of the Type Directors Club New York, The Art Directors Club, an honorary member of the Typographic Circle London and D&AD. Among the other positions he holds, he is Vice-President of the German Design Council and President of the International Institute for Information Design (IIID). He holds an honorary professorship at the Academy of Arts in Bremen and teaches workshops at design schools across the world.
Libby Carton, BDes, MA, MIDI
Libby Carton was educated in visual communications at the National College of Art and Design (NCAD) in Dublin, where she received her degree in 1988 and an MA in 2001.
In 1997, with Rick LeVert, she founded the design practice Carton LeVert in Berlin, Germany. Prior to establishing her own studio, Libby worked at Pentagram in New York before moving to MetaDesign and WAF Werbegesellschaft in Berlin, where her work for print and visual identity design received numerous awards including a gold medal from the Art Directors Club of Europe.
In 1998 Carton LeVert migrated from Berlin to Dublin. Four years later the partners moved the studio to County Donegal in Ireland's northwest. Libby now enjoys the challenge of practicing her very urban profession in a comparatively remote, rural environment.
Libby has lectured at the Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design & Technology, Dublin Institute of Technology and the National College of Art & Design. She has been a member of numerous jury panels, including those for the IDI, ICAD and GDBA Awards. Since her return to Ireland in 1998 Libby has been actively involved with the Institute of Designers in Ireland, serving as its elected President in 2002.
Fehler
Internationally respected digital artists Fehler have been described as 'a William Morris for the digital age'.
Incorrectly perceived as a solo project by Fallt (www.fallt.com) co- founder Christopher Murphy, Fehler in fact exists as a platform for a number of aligned artists and designers to work in differing combinations, whilst remaining otherwise anonymous. Fehler participants have included: Christopher Murphy (Fallt, Bremsstrahlung); Alorenz (Kitty Yo, Mille Plateaux); Fairchild Semiconductor (Fallt, RGB); Christophe Behrens (Fallt, 1,024); and Otaku Yakuza (Fallt, Aubergine).
In addition to creating works for Absolut Vodka and numerous high profile clients worldwide Fehler have worked within the field of audio-related design for the last decade, producing work for a variety of independent labels worldwide.
Their work has featured alongside internationally respected designers including The Designers Republic, Tomato, Alorenz and Peter Saville in 'Sampler 3' and 'CD Art - Innovation in CD Packaging Design'. They have also featured in Creative Review and were highlighted in an article on 'Laptop Aesthetics' in Eye Magazine.
'[Their] compelling mixture of industry and vision... reliance on naked invention and pure graphic craft, means that [they] could be considered a William Morris for the digital age.' (Creative Review)
